How this all started... and about me

My name is Susan, I am a full time student, a mom of three, married to a wonderful man.  And one las thing I am legally blind, I may not look like your average blind person, I hve what is called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is a genetic eye disease, it also means that I have no side vision, well that is not the truth I have 10 degrees in one eye and 15 in the other. I gave up driving almost 3 years ago, which I miss tremendously, but in WI you have to have one eye with at least 20 degrees in one eye.  Which puts me out of that realm.  So I have someone drive me places, which on most days is my daughter who is now 21.
Since she is the one who takes me places, she has noticed she has gotten older that I do not always see things that come up on the side of me, I have walked into things and try to run over people with my shopping cart, she has been pushing me and pulling me through stores for a long time I guess, but i never really noticed.  I guess it had gotten bad soooo...
So she and her brother encouraged me to apply for a guide dog, I thought about it for a long time, I knew that there was a waiting list to get one. Not sure if I really wanted one or not because I did not know what I would have to do get one.  So I had a friend from a chat site to set me information to several places that I could apply for one.  I filled out one application at occupaws, a few months later I got a call from them and they had a dog they wanted me to walk with so I walked with him, to see if I was a candidate to receive a  guide dog, I walked with Barry, he was so cute and lovable, I knew at that point that a guide dog maybe a good idea.  I was a candidate to get a guide dog, I had to wait for them to make a decision on if I would be put on the list, a few weeks later I received a letter from occupaws and I was on the waiting for a guide dog!  I was so happy, but alas the waiting period to get a guide dog was 6 months to up 2 years!  At least I was on the list.  A few months (I think 6 to be exact went by) and I got a call frome Deanne at occupaws, and she said that they have a dog they wanted me to walk with,  This is when she brought Meadow over so that I could walk with him....She knew by walking with us that we were perfect match!  This was in June of 2012,  I offically got Meadow in October 1,2012 and we have been together ever since.  Having a guide dog has been such a rewarding experience, and challenging at times because I am still new to having him around, but I bring him everywhere with me.  He is really amazing.

So now the adventure begins with Meadow and I.....

Don't feel sorry for me

I have had my eye condition since I was about 5 years old,  I always had thick glasses. I was endlessly teased in school by my classmates,  and now over 20 years later when they find out that I am losing my vision they say "sorry" for being mean to me as a kids,  this surprises me, because I think they just feel sorry for me.  I am not ever sure it is a sincere apology.  So I graciously accept it.

Even though I am losing my sight, I do not let it stop me from doing anything,  I am working on getting my associates degree...and I love to quilt, spend time with my family.

So please do not feel sorry for me.  I do not want your pity,,,,,,,
